Tobacco Harvest Underway

Harvest is now underway on most farms.  There are no widespread problems reported to the CTRF at this time.  Currently, aphid and hornworm pressure seem to be very limited in most fields.  To date, there have been no reports this season of Blue Mold in Ontario.

The CTRF will start harvesting trials later this week.  These trials are conducted in cooperation with tobacco growers spread across the tobacco producing area of Ontario.  Several varieties that are in the breeding trials have resistance to Black Root Rot, Tobacco Mosaic Virus, and Potato Virus Y.  Screening for resistance to Tobacco Cyst Nematode has also been included in the variety development program.  The Plant Protection and Agronomy programs have been experimenting with various nematicides, fumigants, sucker control products, fungicides and rotational crops this year.  Similar to past years, the CTRF will be holding an Open House later this year for growers to view cured leaf from experimental and registered varieties and get an update from the Plant Protection and Agronomy programs.
